Rules change for Salvation Army donors

April 21, 1998

Those who donate to the United Way and want their contributions to go to the Hagerstown Corps of the Salvation Army will have to change the way they make donations this year, said Maj. Robert Henderson.

When people fill out annual United Way pledge forms, they may make Salvation Army donations through a "designations only" category, according to Henderson.

Some employers, however, use a generic donor card that does not give people an opportunity to specify donations for certain organizations, said Henderson.

The change comes after the United Way's decision not to allow member agencies to make fund-raising mailings between Sept. 1 and Nov. 30 each year, said Henderson. But the Salvation Army has a long tradition of having a Christmas fund-raising drive at that time of year.

The two agencies later worked out the plan for the special designation of funds, according to Henderson.
