Rhoda V.C. Barnes

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Rhoda V. Carbaugh Barnes, 88, a resident of Piney Mountain Nursing Home, and formerly of South Mountain, Pa., died Monday, April 20, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Dec. 12, 1909, in South Mountain, she was the daughter of the late James W. and Ida Barber Carbaugh.

Her husband, Clyde A. Barnes, died on Jan. 28. They were married Dec. 29, 1925.

She was employed at Samuel G. Dixon State Hospital, now South Mountain Restoration Center, from June 1945 to December 1971 as a diabetic cook.

She was a member of South Mountain Bible Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Della E. Kipiel of Fayetteville, Eva D. Wagaman of South Mountain, and Verna Y. Sloat of Biglerville, Pa.; one son, Donald A. Barnes of South Mountain; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Anna M. Baker; one son, Harold W. Barnes; two sisters, Glovia Kauffman and Neoma Cromwell; three brothers, Clyde Carbaugh, Robye Carbaugh, and Orlo Carbaugh; and one granddaughter.

Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, Pa. The Rev. David L. Keener will officiate. Burial will be in Strang's Cemetery in South Mountain.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Mary E. Brumback

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - Mary Elizabeth Thorn Brumback, 101, of Jacksonville, died Monday, April 20, 1998, at her son's home.

Born Aug. 24, 1896, in Vaughn's Summit, Va., she was the daughter of the late Harry Peter and Mary Livers Thorn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Lynn Hamilton Brumback.

She was woman golf champion for several years at Fountainhead Country Club in Hagerstown. During World War II she was a volunteer Gray Lady of the American Red Cross, working with wounded veterans at Newton Baker Army Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.

She is survived by her son, Dr. Frank E. Brumback; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by one great-granddaughter.

Graveside services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg. The Rev. Rob Hill will officiate.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the chapel in Rosedale Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Red Cross, Onslow County Chapter, 12 Ruth St., Jacksonville, N.C. 28540; or to your favorite charity.

Jerry S. Davis

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Services for Jerry S. Davis, 49, of 630 Lincoln Way East, who died Saturday, April 18, 1998, have been changed to Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

William R. Thomas Sr.

William Russell Thomas Sr., 61, of 537 Salem Ave., Hagerstown, who died Saturday, April 18, 1998, was employed as a painter. He is survived by a sister, Nancy J. Summerlin of Virginia. He was preceded in death by a brother, Michael G. Thomas.

Woodrow L. Mowen

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Woodrow L. "Woody" Mowen, 84, of 832 S. Church St., died Monday, April 20, 1998, at Waynesboro Hospital.

Born Aug. 12, 1913, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Joseph and Anna Provard Mowen.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Isabel A. Peters Mowen, in 1989.

He was a caretaker at Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesboro from 1934 until his retirement in 1988.

He attended Five Forks Brethren in Christ Church.

He is survived by one daughter, Shirley Jean Welsh of Waynesboro; one sister, Arlene Niedenthol of Waynesboro; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara A. Ellio; three sisters; 15 brothers; one granddaughter; and one grandson.

Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. H. Ray Kipe will officiate. Burial will be at Green Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 452 E. King St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Janet V. Johnson

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Janet V. Johnson, 77, of ManorCare Health Services in Chambersburg and formerly of Greencastle, Pa., died Sunday, April 19, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Aug. 24, 1920, in Greencastle, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Annie Snider Elliott.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard L. Johnson, in 1978.

She was a graduate of Greencastle High School.

She had retired from the former Fairchild Aircraft Co., Hagerstown.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Greencastle.

She had attended the Greencastle Senior Citizen Center and worked with ceramics. She was a member of AARP.
