14 Washington Co. teachers to get awards

Fourteen Washington County educators have been chosen to receive this year's Awards of Excellence in Education, a business partnership program sponsored by the Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce and the Washington County Board of Education.

The awards will be presented at a recognition banquet on Wednesday, April 29 at the Venice Inn.

Local businesses along with the Chamber of Commerce and the school board will recognize the educators for their contributions to education and to the community.

Five of the award winners from Washington County public schools have been named finalists in the Washington County Teacher of the Year 1998 program. The Teacher of the Year will be named at the banquet.

Award recipients were selected from nominations submitted by teachers, principals and parents.

The five finalists for Teacher of the Year are: Carol Corwell-Martin of Salem Avenue Elementary, Rob Hovermale of E. Russell Hicks Middle, Rebecca Leverett of Lincolnshire Elementary, Pam Rubisch of Conococheague Elementary and Cynthia Young of Salem Avenue Elementary.

Awards of Excellence winners in addition to the finalists are: Sally Bacon of Old Forge Elementary; Barbara Beckley of Springfield Middle; James Conrad, principal of Clear Spring Middle; Linda Krevis of St. Mary's Elementary; James Martin of St. Maria Goretti High; Janis McVey of South Hagerstown High; Bonnie Pratt of St. Maria Goretti High; Karen Saylor of Western Heights Middle; and Shirley Shanholtz of Smithsburg Elementary.
