2 charged after home entered in Smithsburg

SMITHSBURG - A Hagerstown man and his girlfriend were charged Monday after Washington County Sheriff's deputies found an unoccupied home had been entered through a rear bedroom window, according to a Sheriff's report.

Steven Wayne Benner, 18, of 12021 Mayfair Ave., and Shannon Nichole Coble, 20, of 145 East Ave., Apartment 2, were charged with one count each of burglary of the fourth degree, according to the report.

Sheriff's deputies responded to 13745 Frazier Rd. at 7:37 a.m., where they discovered evidence of forced entry in two areas of the home that were unoccupied, the report said.


Benner is the son of the homeowner, the report said.

Man charged after chase by police Hagerstown

A Hagerstown man was charged Monday after police were led on a foot chase through several city streets, according to Hagerstown Police.

Billy Jo Beatty, 22, of 230 Summit Ave., was charged with one count each of driving a vehicle without the owner's consent, attempting to elude police by fleeing on foot, and driving without supervision on a learner's permit, police said.

Police were dispatched to 303 Reynolds Ave. at 12:01 a.m. when the owner of a 1995 Ford noticed that it wasn't parked outside in front of her home, police said.

Police found the car at 12:43 a.m. traveling south on South Burhans Boulevard before it turned east onto Antietam Street and then south on Walnut Street, police said.

The car stopped immediately after an officer activated the lights on his cruiser, but the driver fled on foot east toward South Prospect Street, police said.

Police followed the driver through yards and alleys on foot to Summit Avenue and into the parking lot of The Herald-Mail, where he was arrested, police said.

Man charged in theft of stereo from car

A Sharpsburg area man was charged Saturday in the theft of a compact disc car stereo earlier this month, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

Charges against Brad Lyle Dixon, 18, of Gen. Stonewall Jackson Circle west of Sharpsburg, stemmed from an April 2 incident behind the Honda car dealership in Hagerstown, police said.

He was released on personal recognizance.

On that date, a man was found around 1 a.m. with two screwdrivers and a flashlight, police said.

The car stereo with the manufacturer's serial number identification removed was found inside the man's vehicle, police alleged.

Dixon was charged with possession of motor vehicle burglar tools and retaining a manufactured article with the serial number removed, police said.

Thefts reported in city

Hagerstown City Police reported the following on Monday:

* Two Duncan Brothers tires were reported stolen Friday evening from 817 Dual Highway.

* A small chrome Davis Industries .38-caliber revolver was reported stolen Saturday evening from a bedroom in an apartment at 134 Broadway.

* A black and red cloth purse was reported stolen Sunday from an employee at the McDonald's in the 300 block of Dual Highway. The purse contained $140.

Assault charge filed

A Hagerstown area man was charged with second-degree assault against his wife on Sunday, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

Jeffrey Lynn Sensenbaugh, 27, of 20612 Wren Lane east of Hagerstown, was released on personal recognizance Monday afternoon, according to a Sheriff's deputy.

Angela Marie Sensenbaugh, 24, was treated at Washington County Hospital and released, police said.
