City honors citizens

The first winners of the City of Hagerstown's new annual citizen and corporate awards were announced Tuesday.

According to city spokeswoman Karen Giffin, the award winners are:

- Citizen award: Margaret Washington, who for 15 years annually raised money to take underprivileged youth in the Jonathan Street area to amusement parks.

- Business award: Charlie Sekula, who is celebrating the 10th anniversary of his Schmankerl Stube restaurant and has worked to revitalize downtown.

- Nonprofit award: Community Free Clinic, which has given free and low-cost health services to city residents for several years.

- Corporate Donor award: LeRoy Myers Jr., owner of Myers Building Systems Inc. Myers won for his work with the Hagerstown Ice & Sports Complex and the Hagerstown Business Park.


Myers donated more than $40,000 worth of in-kind services toward the ice rink, according to Deborah Everhart, the city's economic development coordinator.

- Corporate award: Maryland Ribbon, a division of C.M. Offray and Sons Inc. Maryland Ribbon has committed to the area by recently expanding the business.

The winners will be honored at a 6 p.m. ceremony at City Hall on April 21, during Municipal Government Week, Giffin said. The ceremony will be broadcast live on the government channel, Antietam Cable Television's channel six.
