BALTIMORE - Smithsburg High School's Odyssey of the Mind team was the highest-placing Washington County team at the state championships at the University of Maryland Baltimore County Saturday.

Smithsburg's Marvelous Mentor Division II team finished fourth, said Georgiana Keller, Western Maryland regional director for Odyssey of the Mind.

Teams from Bester Elementary School, Cascade Elementary School, Boonsboro High School, North Hagerstown High School and Smithsburg High School competed.

Smithsburg was the only team to finish in the top five, Keller said.

Smithsburg's team is coached by Dirk Hoffman, Dave Williams and Melissa Williams.

The team members are Adrienne Mehalow, Taryn Leonard, Ryan Williams, Lori Rejonis, Anna Barvir, Jonathan Kresge and Brooke Latta.

The Marvelous Mentor competition requires teams to make a humourous presentation about a fictional advertising agency's marketing of a nutritional product, including a television commercial, original music, packaging for the product and a discussion of the product's nutritional benefits.

Frederick High School's team in Marvelous Mentor Division III won first place, and advances to the World Finals in Orlando, Fla., which will be held May 27 to May 30.

Of the 260 teams competing, only 13 will go on to Orlando, Keller said.

Also, Jessica Gonder, a sixth grader at E. Russell Hicks Middle School, won the design for the state Odyssey program booklet. She received $100 and a plaque.
