Frederick students vying for geography honors

FREDERICK, Md. - Six middle-school students from Frederick County, Md., public schools are competing Friday at the state level of the National Geography Bee at Montgomery Community College near Gaithersburg, Md.

The top 100 scorers from contests in schools across the state are competing.

Frederick County participants include: Pat Benitez, a sixth-grader at New Market Middle School; Scott Daley, an eighth-grader at Monocacy Middle School; Kurt Kuehne, a sixth-grader at Windsor Knolls Middle School; Alexander Dube, an eighth-grader at Walkersville Middle School; Josh Ballew, a seventh-grader at Thurmont Middle School; and Colin Blair, an eighth-grader at Middletown Middle School.

The bee is sponsored by the National Geographic Society and Sylvan Learning Centers. Students from across the United States and the five U.S. territories are participating.

The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for state champions and their teacher-escorts to participate in the National Geography Bee on May 19 and 20.

The national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship.
