Environmentalist speaking at Shepherd

March 31, 1998

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Writer and environmentalist Steve Lerner will speak at 8 p.m. today in the Shepherd College Center's Storer Ballroom.

Lerner will discuss his latest book, "Eco-Pioneers: Practical Visionaries Solving Today's Environmental Problems."

He defines eco-pioneers as modern pathfinders who are working in the American pragmatic tradition to reduce the pace of environmental degradation. Lerner provides case studies of people exploring sustainable ways to log forests, grow food, save plant species, build houses, generate power, reuse materials, and reduce waste and consumption.

Lerner has reported on environmental and social justice issues for 20 years. He is the author of "The Earth Summit: Conversations with Architects of an Ecologically Sustainable Future" and "Beyond the Earth Summit: Conversations with Advocates of Sustainable Development." Lerner is also research director of Commonwealth, a health and environmental research institute.

This event is free and open to the public. For information, call the program board at 1-304-876-5326.
