Franklin Co. jobless rate drops

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The unemployment rate for Franklin County, Pa., fell from 4.6 percent in January to 4.3 percent in February, according to preliminary figures released Tuesday by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry.

The number of people without jobs fell from 3,000 to 2,800, according to the report. The number of people with jobs rose 900 to 63,400, according to the department's Bureau of Research and Statistics.

The jobless rate was still higher than the 3.5 percent recorded in December, but slightly lower than the February 1997 figure of 4.4 percent, according to the report.

In Fulton County, Pa., the rate dipped from 6.6 to 6.4 percent in February. The number of unemployed people fell by 100 to approximately 400 with 6,500 people employed, the report said.

In February 1997, the unemployment rate in Fulton County was 4.9 percent.

In nonagricultural jobs, the number of people employed in the two counties was up 700 to 55,600. The report said the number of industrial and goods-producing jobs rose by 100 to 18,500. Manufacturing jobs rose by 200 to 16,000, while the number of people employed in construction fell by 100 to 2,300.

Service industry jobs increased from 36,500 to 37,100.
