Pa. man killed by tractor

March 31, 1998

NEEDMORE, Pa. - A Belfast Township man was killed Saturday when the tractor he was driving rolled over and crushed him, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Elmer E. Hann, 64, of Needmore, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at 3:50 p.m. by Fulton County Deputy Coroner Darryl Heckman, police said. Heckman said Hann died of chest injuries.

Heckman said the accident happened on the lane leading from Timber Ridge Road onto his farm. He said Hann's body was discovered at about 1:30 p.m., but Heckman did not know who reported the accident to police.

Hann was using the small John Deere field tractor to pull a small trailer filled with wood when he turned off Timber Ridge Road and started down the lane, Heckman said.

Heckman said Hann may have lost control as the tractor was going down the hill. The tractor ran off the lane and rolled on top of him, he said.

Heckman said the tractor did not have a rollover bar.

A memorial service for Hann will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Needmore Bible Church.
