Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call weekdays at 301-791-6236.

Readers are welcome to leave their recorded message on any topic they choose, but some calls are screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"This is for the person that called in about the billiards parlor in Halfway. I think you need to take a hard look and realize that Halfway really needs something to do because there's a lot of kids out there that have nothing to do and getting in trouble. This would bring interest into Halfway. They said that we don't need or want it here in Halfway. I don't think you speak for everybody on that one, buddy. I think you need to go around and get a petition or do something else with your time."

"Why can't our downtown alleys be more safe to walk through? They are easier walking than the street pavements and a shortcut to downtown."

"Hello Mail Call. I'd like to say thanks and congratulations to the volunteer firemen of Washington County for the fine job they did up here on West Washington Street Monday night when the West End Market burned down. It's a wonderful thing that we have these volunteer firemen. I'd hate to think of what could have happened if we had no volunteers because those truck drivers and those with them wouldn't have been able to contain that blaze. That's the worst fire I've seen in Hagerstown for some time. Thank you again and have a good day."

"This is to the person calling in defending Ron Bowers. I would not like to know him personally and I didn't know that you had to know each and every candidate personally."

"Yes. This is to Zeek from parts unknown. Yes, people like you that discriminate against young adults, I think you should sit down, shut up and mind your own business."

"I wish the County Commissioners could move the Brook Lane Center closer to Hagerstown. As a matter of fact, you could put it right in the middle of town here with all this craziness and ignorance going on. Thank you."

"Hello out there in Clinton land. I'm sure glad that I'm not a Democrat because like I say, he is something else and you women are something else, too. So when us men get to running around on you and committing adultery, we don't want to hear anything from you all about it because you haven't anything to say about this man doing it. So we don't want to hear anything. If I do it I don't want my wife to say anything to me because evidently it's OK as long as it's mine and her business. You know, this is sick. Grossly sick. How sad this country has gotten on its morals. Thank you."

"Don't let the ad for a police officer in Smithsburg mislead you to the increasing of size of the police force. I don't know why it's being kept secret but Officer Tyler is leaving. So it's not going to increase anything, it's just going to add to the problems in Smithsburg. Thank you."

"Yes. This is about the Calorad diet. I've been on it for two months and I've already lost 15 pounds and 17 inches. Some people will lose in the first and some will gain but you have to give it a try. The people that are on it know what I mean. It's a great way to lose it."

"This is to Zeek from parts unknown. No - we didn't miss you. Thank you."

"Hi Mail Call. I'd like to say greetings to a very good neighbor of mine. You see, I can't afford a card and I can't afford a stamp because of my high sewer bills. Thank you, Ron Bowers. Have a good day, neighbor."

"Yes. I just read about Councilman Metzner's reaction to Gov. Parris Glendening spending $1.4 million on a pork barrel project in downtown Hagerstown. He said that he's a guy who really puts his money where his mouth is. Believe it or not, councilman, that's my money and the money of other citizens that he's putting where his mouth is and we don't like it."
