A statewide summer education camp that revolves around major attractions in Maryland will be held in Washington County for the second time this year.

This year's Maryland Summer Centers Program in Washington County will be at Springfield Middle School between Aug. 3-7.

Courses include aquatics, environmental art, Civil War history and literature. Emphasis will be on long-term research with students presenting their findings on the final day.

Cost to students is $100. A limited amount of scholarship money is available to students who qualify for free or reduced lunch.

School Parent Teacher Associations might consider offering a school-based scholarship or partial scholarship for needy students.

The Maryland Summer Centers program, for gifted students, was held at 14 locations in the state last year.

The classes were set in a variety of backgrounds, from aboard ships in the Port of Baltimore to marshes in the Chesapeake Bay. Last year's class in Washington County was at the Fairview Outdoor Center.
