Driver killed in single-car accident

FREDERICK, Md. - A Jefferson, Md., man was killed Tuesday afternoon when he was thrown from his car after it struck an embankment and overturned, according to Maryland State Police.

Dennis Michael McCarthy, 54, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

McCarthy was driving a 1984 Nissan 300 ZX south on Md. 17 west of Harmony Road at 3:54 p.m. when he apparently lost control and struck an embankment on the right of the road, causing the vehicle to overturn, police said.

He was not wearing his seat belt, police said.

An investigation determined the accident was caused by speed and driver error, police said.

No other vehicles were involved, police said.
