Road will remain open

FUNKSTOWN - Based on calls and letters protesting the proposed closing of Licking Creek Road, the Washington County Commissioners decided Tuesday night to deny the Department of Natural Resources' request and leave the road open.

DNR had requested the closing of the road, between Hancock and Clear Spring, because of problems with vandalism, Commissioners President Gregory I. Snook said.

A public hearing had been scheduled for later this month, Snook said.

Meanwhile, the commissioners have received numerous calls from area residents and sportsmen who didn't want the road closed, he said.

Commissioner Ronald Bowers said he got 27 calls from people who were against the proposal.

"I think we all had a lot of calls," said Commissioners Vice President John S. Shank.
