Shoot hoops to help feed needy

March 07, 1998

For the next three weekends, shoppers at the Martin's Food Market on the Dual Highway can shoot three basketball free throws for one dollar, earning prizes for themselves and revenue for Food Resources Inc.

Sponsored by the store, Coca-Cola and Martin's Potato Chips, the basketball shoot-out will be today and Sunday, March 14 and 15, and March 21 and 22.

Saturday hours will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and from 1-5 p.m. Sundays.

All contestants receive a free coke and bag of chips. Those who make all three shots will be eligible for the March 22 finals at 4:30 p.m.

The grand prize winner will receive a portable basketball backboard. Other prizes include $50 gift certificates and some basketballs.

The money raised will benefit Food Resources Inc., a warehouse on Eldridge Drive in Hagerstown where food is bought, stored and distributed to charitable organizations serving the needy.

Also in March, postal employees are asking their customers to support the 9th annual Harvest for the Hungry campaign.

That can be done by leaving non-perishable food donations in their mailboxes during Letter Carrier Week, March 14-21.
