2 teens charged with burglary

MT. AIRY - A victim of a burglary at Peddicord Road on Tuesday morning blocked the escape of two suspects with his vehicle while keeping telephone contact with police, which led to charges against two 16-year-old juveniles, according to Maryland State Police.

The juveniles were charged with first-degree burglary and malicious destruction of property, police said. They were placed in custody of the state Department of Juvenile Services, police said.

Police said they received a call from a resident who reported a burglary in progress at 14532 Peddicord Road at about 9 a.m. and who had blocked the escape of the suspects' vehicle with his vehicle. When police arrived, they got a physical description of the suspects, who ran from the residence and were found walking on Black Angus Road, police said.

Man charged with giving false report

SMITHSBURG - A Smithsburg man was charged Tuesday after a two-week investigation found another person was involved in a hit-and-run accident, according to Maryland State Police.

Jay Edward Oyler, 35, of 12106 Crystal Falls Drive, was charged with hit-and-run and giving false accident information to police, according to a police report.

After a hit-and-run accident at 1:30 a.m. Feb. 14 at Maple Avenue and Schaller Lane, Michael Lynn Lefferts, 29, of 5 Douglas Court East, Smithsburg, reported to police he was a victim and gave a description of the striking vehicle, police said.

On Feb. 16, Oyler called Maryland State Police to report that he was the victim of a hit-and-run on the same date and time as Lefferts, police said.

An investigation found that the moderate damage to the right front of Oyler's 1995 Jeep Wrangler was consistent with the moderate damage to the front end of Leffert's 1989 Chevrolet S-10, police said.
