Police promotions planned

Hagerstown City Police will reclassify four sergeants to lieutenants this year, a move intended to create a clearer line of authority and accountability.

Council members approved the move 5-0 Tuesday night during their regular session.

Four sergeants currently are assigned to each of the three shifts. Under the change, one of the sergeant positions for each shift would become a lieutenant's slot.

The fourth lieutenant would be in the criminal investigations division.

The promotion process is in March.

Police Chief Dale Jones has said the city should at least break even on the cost of the move and could save money, depending on who is promoted.

Lieutenants cannot earn overtime as sergeants do, but they would have a higher annual base salary.

Jones said the lieutenants' base pay would be less than the maximum lieutenant salary of $49,504.
