February 28, 1998

A group of St. Maria Goretti High School students have captured first place in an academic competition focusing on the U.S. Constitution and will represent the state in a national competition.

The 22 students from the Hagerstown school won the state competition of the "We the People" contest after successfully answering a battery of questions about the Constitution, said St. Maria Goretti social studies teacher John Ridge.

The students will compete in the national competition in Washington, D.C., May 1-5, Ridge said.

Winning the national phase of the contest, which was founded by former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Earl Warren, is considered a high honor, Ridge said.
