Braddock wins MathCounts

Students from Braddock Middle School in Allegany County won top team and individual honors Saturday in the 15th annual MathCounts competition at E. Russell Hicks Middle School.

Twenty-one seventh- and eighth-graders from Allegany and Washington counties took part in the contest, which was sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers. Volunteers from the Hagerstown Chapter of Professional Engineers conducted the local event.

Braddock Middle won the team event, with Clear Spring Middle School second and Boonsboro Middle School third.

In the individual competition, Braddock Middle's Tom Farrell, Arron MacGray, Nathan Markey and Michael Klepitch took first through fourth place. Coliin Calhoun of Clear Spring Middle placed fifth and Micah Weintraub of Boonsboro Middle finished sixth.

The top 16 individual finishers were then randomly paired in a head-to-head elimination tournament. Participants were given 45 seconds to solve problems in a best-of-three problem format. In this event, Sharath Bellamy of Braddock Heights was the winner, followed by Markey and MacGray of Braddock Middle and Patrick McNeely of Boonsboro Middle.

The Braddock team will go on to compete in the state MathCounts competition March 28 at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.
