Hancock woman sentenced for having sex with boy

February 26, 1998

A Hancock woman was sentenced Tuesday in Washington County Circuit Court to serve two years in prison for having sex with a 14-year-old boy last summer.

Jeannie Marie Payne, 27, of 605 Quaker Creek Apartments, Hancock, pleaded guilty to contributing to the condition of a child and fourth-degree sex offense, according to court records.

Judge John H. McDowell originally imposed a three-year sentence for the contributing charge and two more years for the sex offense, but suspended all but the two years.

According to court records, the case came to light on July 2, 1997, when the boy's mother told Hancock City Police that her son was spending a lot of time at Payne's apartment.

The investigation revealed there had been incidents of kissing, fondling and sexual intercourse between Payne and the boy, court records said.

Sexually-explicit letters written by Payne to the boy were contained in the court file.

Probation will be for five years once she is released from custody, McDowell ordered.
