Budget experience sought in supervisor

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Franklin County President Judge John Walker said Wednesday he will be looking for someone with experience in managing a large budget when he appoints a supervisor to fill a vacancy on Greene Township's board of supervisors.

"I'm going to accept applications until Monday, March 9 ... I want this resolved by the end of March," Walker said. The 15 people who previously applied to fill the vacancy on the three-member board will not have to submit new applications, Walker said.

At the same time, he said he wants the selection process to be as open as possible.

"In the past, I've always appointed a person who is from the same political party as the person who left office," the judge said. In this case he will be filling the vacancy created by the Jan. 17 resignation of Republican Jack Furry, 66, of Fayetteville, Pa.

The other township supervisors, Dave Jamison and Paul Ambrose, could not reach an agreement on a replacement by the Feb. 17 deadline.

Ambrose nominated former supervisor Richard P. Kramer and Jamison nominated Edwin Harr, who is retired from the Scotland School for Veterans Children.

When the supervisors couldn't agree, the issue would have gone to a vacancy board, but the supervisors did not appoint one. The vacancy board would have been composed of the remaining supervisors and a third person to serve as chairman, but Ambrose said earlier this month that he and Jamison couldn't agree on who would be the tie-breaker.

The township petitioned the court this week to appoint Furry's replacement.

Walker said the last appointment he could recall making was in 1994, when he named Cheryl Plummer to fill the vacancy on the Franklin County Board of Commissioners created by the death of Dennis Zeger.

The judge said applications can be addressed to his chambers at the Franklin County Courthouse, 157 Lincoln Way East, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.
