One percent repair loans available

Homeowners in rural areas who need repairs to their houses but can't afford regular loans may be eligible for a government loan at only 1 percent interest through the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Rural Development Agency.

These loans are only available to very low income people. In Washington County, very low income is defined at approximately $17,000, depending upon the number of people living in the household and other factors.

Loan funds are used for repairs to improve or modernize a home, make it safer or more sanitary, or remove health and safety hazards.

Examples of loan fund use would be for repairing/replacing a roof, siding, installing insulation, storm windows and doors, remodel dwellings to make them accessible to household members with disabilities, etc.

Anyone interested in the program or wanting more information should contact Bonnie Rohrer, Community Development Specialist at 301-797-1670 or stop by the Rural Development Office at 1260 Maryland Ave., Hagerstown.
