Students, driver injured in school bus accident

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Eight students and a school bus driver were treated for minor injuries at Chambersburg Hospital on Friday after a pickup truck hit the bus, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

The students were on their way home from Faust Junior High School and Chambersburg Area Senior High School shortly before 4 p.m. when the bus was hit, said Trooper Randy B. Kane.

Kevin Weaver, of Myerstown, Pa., was in an S-turn eastbound on Salem Road in Greene Township when the brakes locked up and the 1994 Dodge Ram 2500 slid across into the westbound lane and hit the front left corner of the bus, police said.

The bus was pushed about 10 feet and ended up partially off the road, police said.

Weaver and his passenger, Luke Gerald Weaver, of Myerstown, were not injured, police said. Both were wearing seat belts.

The truck's speed was a factor, police said. No charges had been filed as of Saturday night. The truck is owned by Weaver Insulation in Lebanon, Pa., police said.

Bus passenger Sonja I. Rodriguez was in fair condition at Chambersburg Hospital on Saturday night, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Bus driver David H. Burkholder and passengers Jennifer R. Horst, Tray E. Higgins, Heather McClure, Ashley Eckerod, Sara Shatzer and Jenny Shetzer were treated and released, the spokeswoman said.

Passenger William J. Laubs received minor injury, police said. Chambersburg Hospital had no record of Laubs, she said.

Also on the bus, but not injured according to state police, were Ronald E. Keefer, Dustin L. Keefer and Vincent W. Royal.
