School board allows delay of payment
The Washington County Board of Education Tuesday allowed the Smithsburg Athletic Boosters club to postpone a $4,000 payment on a loan to pay for lighting and other improvements at the Smithsburg High School athletic field.
Doug Bachtell of the Smithsburg Athletic Boosters asked for permission to defer the payment for one year to allow the club to pay off a $37,000 bank loan for the improvements.
Paying off the bank loan now will save the boosters club about $590 in interest, said Bachtell.
The boosters club also borrowed $20,000 from a revolving loan fund managed by the school board for the improvements.
Smithsburg High School officials decided to install lighting and make other improvements to the field because of the addition of other sports at the school, particularly soccer, Bachtell said.
