Funds going to pool upgrade

HARRISBURG, Pa. - The Department of Community and Economic Development recently awarded $30,000 to the Shippensburg (Pa.) Area Parks and Recreation Commission, the Borough of Shippensburg and Shippensburg Township for renovations and upgrades to the Shippensburg Memorial Park Pool.

The funds came in the form of three $10,000 grants.

"The citizens of Shippensburg will benefit greatly from the rehabilitation of this much-used and much-enjoyed swimming pool," said state Rep. Jeffrey Coy, D-Franklin.

"It is estimated that this pool serves 10,000 people per summer, or more than 135 people per day, most of whom are young families who rely on this pool for summer fun and exercise," Coy said.

The pool was built in the early 1950s and has not had any major renovations since 1975, Coy said.

Coy said he intends to help raise the rest of the money necessary to complete the project.

The estimated cost of the renovations is $226,400.

About $76,000 has been raised by the Parks and Recreation Commission and efforts to raise more money through private funding and other grant programs are ongoing.
