Preparations made for summer food programs

HARRISBURG, Pa. - The Pennsylvania Department of Education is seeking individual sponsors and food service management companies to participate in the 1998 Summer Food Service Program for children.

Sponsors can be public and private school food authorities, local government authorities and nonprofit organizations such as camps, community action agencies, youth organizations and shelters.

The federally funded program reimburses sponsors for free meals served to children in low-income neighborhoods during the summer months and is intended to continue the school lunch program's free and reduced meals when school is not in session.

For an application, call the Pa. Department of Education's Division of Food and Nutrition at 1-800-331-0129.

Food service management companies must register by March 13. All other applications will be accepted until April 30.

In West Virginia

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - All food service companies wishing to contract with sponsors of the Summer Food Service Program to provide meals in accordance with federal regulations must first register with the West Virginia Department of Education.

The program, through grants and other means, assists West Virginia and other states to initiate, maintain and expand nonprofit food service programs for children during the summer months.

Any sponsor of the program is permitted to contract through a bidding procedure with a food service management company to operate its entire food service or for the preparation of meals to be served under the program.
