Smithsburg receives tax rebate from county

SMITHSBURG - Smithsburg will receive a property tax rebate from Washington County of $23,895 this year, a drop of 5.97 percent from $25,412 last year.

"We don't like to lose anything, but it's not going to hurt us," said Smithsburg Mayor Mildred "Mickey" Myers.

The Washington County Commissioners met with Smithsburg council members Tuesday night at Town Hall to present a report on the tax rebate.

The tax rebate from the county partially reimburses municipalities for police, parks and road services they provide.

Of the rebate, $16,312 will go to Smithsburg police services and $7,583 will go to parks.

The rebate is based on Smithsburg's population of 1,221.

After the presentation, the commissioners heard a brief report by Myers about Smithsburg's proposed Veteran's Park, a 30-acre park to be built off Water Street near the center of town.

Myers will present the park plans to the Washington County Recreation and Parks department on April 2 and will request approximately $500,000 to help build it, she said.
