Mail Call

February 06, 1998

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call weekdays at 301-791-6236.

Readers are welcome to leave their recorded message on any topic they choose, but some calls are screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"To the death to all Republicans caller, it's these types of words which have led to Civil War genesis. Just substitute the word Yankee, Rebel, Black, Native American, Jew, Catholic, Muslim etc., etc., and you get the idea. Why would you, probably an unarmed liberal Democrat, threaten law abiding and probably armed Republicans? Be careful for what you wish - it may come true."

"I make crab soup the way I make vegetable soup and the only difference is that you add crab meat instead of beef. It's very good."

"Is it a conspiracy if it's true that Al Capone was suspected of being responsible for many murders that could not be proven but he was sent to jail for a lesser crime of cheating on his income taxes? Slick Willy has been suspected of many important scandals that have not been proven but maybe he'll be caught on something lesser now."

"I get tired of hearing people complain about Clinton. I don't like everything he does but would you rather Reagan be back in there since he stole major factories out of Hagerstown? Fairchild, Eastern Products, Brandt Cabinets to name a few. I'll stick with Clinton any day. Republicans stink when it comes to the economy. Thank you Mail Call."

"This is Beverly and I would like to stop all the rumors in Hagerstown about Hartle Subs. We will be opening beginning the first of March and the store has not been sold outside of the family. Bev and the old crew will be back. No changes in subs, we promise. Thank you and I hope this soon stops all the rumors."

"I hope local and state officials don't knuckle under these veiled and not so veiled threats being made by Mr. Blenckstone, the owner of the Hagerstown Suns. Mainly that if funding for a new stadium is not approved by all parties he may pull his team out of the area. Well, to this I say, don't let the door hit you on the way out. A new stadium is not, I repeat not, the answer to attendance at the stadium. The answer is which major league team are the Suns affiliated with? This is the reason I have not been to one single Suns game in recent years and I am a baseball fan. If they become affiliated with the Orioles once again or maybe even the Pittsburgh organization, then I think attendance would increase. But to go to the expense of a new stadium when the present facility is just fine for Class A play thinking that this will be the answer to all attendance woes is just ludicrous."

"This is for Mail Call. We really enjoy Mail Call. Thanks to the officers and employees of Elks Lodge 378 for all they do for the members and the community. Thank you very much."

"Yes, I would like to address the beauty shop owners also. I feel it would be good business to have prices posted in all shops. What's the big secret as to what you charge for your services? If there is no secret then be courteous to let us know before hand what we may be paying by posting the prices. There should be one set price for services rendered at any and all shops."

"Hi Mail Call. I don't think the city or county should put up their tax dollars to build a new stadium."

"I'm absolutely opposed to any tax dollars being used to build a new stadium in Washington County. If the County Commissioners would ask the people out in the county and not just the ones in the city of Hagerstown, they would see that nobody wants money spent on a stadium."

"Oh man, now those sweet little commissioners may help to fund the new stadium deal. They messed up the water/sewer and now all us taxpayers are all paying for that. Now the City of Hagerstown taxpayers shouldn't have to continue subsidizing the water and sewer debts. I agree on that one but Blenckstone threatens the Suns may go if the area blocks the stadium."

"Hi Mail Call. This is a message to whomever updates the school closings and delay portion of the information lines. I'm a Washington County teacher and when I called the phone line on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 5:15 a.m., I heard there was a 2-hour delay and if conditions changed the phone line would be updated by 7:30 a.m. At 7:30 I started listening to the radio and when I hadn't heard any reports I called the phone line at 7:45 and at this time the line still reported only a 2-hour delay. So I began getting ready for school and it wasn't until 8:10 that the radio station announced the school closings. In the future, whomever updates these lines, please make sure if you say it's to be ready by 7:30, it's ready by 7:30 to prevent teachers and students from going on their way to school."
