Officers assigned to drunken driving team

January 30, 1998

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - The Martinsburg Police Department has assigned four officers to crack down on drunken driving in the city limits.

Capt. Ted Anderson said the new DUI Enforcement Team will use various selective traffic enforcement methods to catch impaired drivers, including stationing members of the team at locations where there has been a history of drunken driving arrests or accidents and where there have been complaints from citizens about impaired drivers.

Anderson said there were 180 DUI-related arrests in the city in 1997.

Officers John Sherman, Mike Womble, Brendan Hall and Stephen Urbanski were assigned to the team, Anderson said. He said the officers will often be reassigned from their normal shifts to be available for duty during times when drunken driving is more prevalent.

According to Anderson, the new enforcement team should not cost much. He anticipates some overtime pay will be needed for team members.

A department news release said the department will work closely with the Eastern Panhandle Community Traffic Safety Program, the Clean Focus Coalition, the DUI Interstate Partnership and other prevention groups.
