Police chief says lobby issue will be resolved

January 22, 1998

Hagerstown Police Chief Dale Jones said Thursday that police officials would resolve the City Council's concerns about having an officer in the lobby of police headquarters at night.

During Tuesday night's work session, Mayor Robert E. Bruchey II said he hadn't seen an officer in the lobby on several occasions at night.

Councilman Lewis C. Metzner said that frustrated him since the city paid to have a bullet-proof shield placed in front of the lobby desk so the sergeant could sit there at night.

Citizens running to police headquarters in an emergency shouldn't be confronted with having to use the phone by the door to call someone inside, city officials said.

Jones said at times only one sergeant is on duty.

That sergeant has several responsibilities that could pull him away from the desk, including checking on prisoners, helping on the street and assisting dispatch, Jones said.
