Firm changing name to Columbia Energy Group

The Columbia Gas System, parent company of Columbia Gas of Maryland and Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania, has changed its name to Columbia Energy Group, company officials said.

The new name and corporate logo - featuring an energy burst dotting the "i" in Columbia - reflect the Reston, Va.-based company's expanded participation in the energy marketplace, according to a press release.

Columbia companies are engaged in all phases of the natural gas business and marketing, fuel management services and electric power generation, sales and trading, according to the release.

"The new corporate logo visually portrays the Columbia Energy Group as a family of distinct business units with shared vision and values," said Oliver Richard, president and CEO of Columbia Energy Group.

Columbia Gas of Maryland and Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania will keep those names but have adopted new logos featuring the energy burst, Columbia Gas spokesman Steve Halvonik said.

Columbia's previous logo, featuring a blue gas flame, had been in use since 1924.

Columbia Gas of Maryland serves about 16,000 customers in Washington County, he said. Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania has roughly 16,000 customers in Franklin, Fulton, Adams and Bedford counties.
