Burhans work will create traffic problems

Work to improve a storm drain that runs under North Burhans Boulevard and West Franklin Street will make traffic conditions in the area "horrendous" this spring, said Assistant City Engineer Rodney Tissue.

Traffic control will have to be handled carefully during the work, said City Engineer Bruce Johnston.

Tissue said that under a proposed contract, the company would have three months to complete the work, but it could be finished quicker. Work is expected to begin in March.

City staff recommended during Tuesday's work session that council members approve the low bidder, E.F. Goetz & Sons Construction Inc. of Chambersburg, Pa.

The firm bid $224,434 on the project, which originally would have included work on Summit Avenue, Tissue said. Since the low bid was 12 percent over budget, the Summit Avenue work will be postponed, he said.

The council will vote during Tuesday's 7 p.m. regular meeting on whether to approve a $209,741 contract with the Chambersburg firm.
