Way cleared for BMX track

January 15, 1998

Hagerstown officials on Tuesday gave a local bicycle racing group the nod to continue planning a BMX race track and skate park at Hagerstown Fairgrounds.

Representatives of Hagerstown BMX, which organized to build and maintain a track for nonmotorized dirt bike racing at the fairgrounds, shared their plans with Hagerstown City Council members during a work session.

The race track would be between 900 and 1,500 feet long and would require 11/2 to 2 acres, said Daniel Baxter, president of the group.

It would be the first BMX track in Maryland, said Baxter, who said the nearest track is in Winchester, Va.

The track would be affiliated with the National Bicycle League, which would provide liability insurance during events, he said.

Councilman J. Wallace McClure said he was concerned about the track's accessibility when no event was taking place and the insurance wasn't effective.

The race track could be enclosed with a chain-link fence to keep people out when there is no supervision, Baxter said.
