Gerad Haupt, an eighth-grader at Clear Spring Middle School, was named Youth of the Month for January by the Washington County Commissioners Tuesday.

Gerad, 13, has made the distinguished honor roll every marking period since the fifth grade.

He was praised for his extensive activities by Commissioner John S. Shank.

Haupt's accomplishments include All State Chorus, All County Chorus and singing in church plays and at The Maryland Theatre.

Haupt is a member of the Student Senate and runs cross country, placing sixth in the county track meet in the eighth grade and third in the county meet in seventh grade.

Haupt is an all-star baseball player, and plays in basketball and soccer leagues.

Haupt also won spelling bees at Clear Spring Middle School in the sixth and seventh grades, and was a member of the Chess Club.

He's received achievement awards in science, social studies and math and had perfect attendance in sixth and seventh grades.

He's participated in Odyssey of the Mind and the Washington County Science and Engineering Fair.

Haupt thanked his teachers, parents and peers for supporting him, and said he's thinking about becoming a doctor when he finishes school.

"With all the facets balanced in his life, the sky is the limit," said Earl Meagher, a counselor at Clear Spring Middle School.

Haupt's parents are Gregory Haupt and Tonya Haupt.

He will receive a $50 savings bond from the Hagerstown Lions Club.
