Donations sought for troops in Bosnia

January 15, 1998

The Washington County chapter of the American Red Cross is seeking donations of coffee, microwave popcorn and other items for overseas troops in need of a mid-winter morale boost.

"This is just something to make their life a little bit better," said Cynthia Blackstock Kline, director of emergency services for the county Red Cross chapter.

The drive is being dubbed "Our Heart Goes Out to You" because the items will arrive overseas near Valentine's Day. But there is no need to donate items that reflect that theme, Kline said.

Instead, recommended donations include hot chocolate, cider, teas, stationery and anything else that someone separated from friends and family might enjoy, she said. Videos and paperback books also are needed for a lending library that has been established, she said.

The items will be mailed to service members stationed in Taszar, Hungary, as part of Operation Joint Guard, the Red Cross support effort for the American presence in Bosnia and Croatia, she said.

She said some local people have been deployed to the region, and some have received items from past Red Cross drives.

Donations can be dropped off at the chapter at 133 S. Prospect St. in Hagerstown, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Deadline for donations is Feb. 13.

Additional information can be obtained by calling Kline at 301-739-0717.
