Inmate sentenced in fight

A prison inmate received a six-month sentence Tuesday in Washington County Circuit Court for a March fight with a correctional officer at the Maryland Correctional Training Center.

Reginald Randolph, 21, who pleaded guilty to second-degree assault, will serve that sentence in addition to the time he has left on a three-year sentence for assault.

The March 28 incident began at 11:45 a.m. on Unit 3, B Tier, when Randolph left his cell to go to his classes, according to court records.

As he walked onto the tier, Randolph threw down a piece of trash and Officer Michael Laing ordered him to pick it up, court records said.

While Randolph was picking it up, Laing saw among Randolph's school books a magazine he wasn't supposed to have, court records said.

An argument ensued and Randolph said Laing grabbed him, court records said. They struggled and Laing used pepper spray on Randolph to help get him under control, court records said.
