Potomac reaches dangerous levels

Boaters and recreational users of the Upper Potomac River watershed should avoid the river, Maryland Natural Resources Police advised on Wednesday.

River levels reached hazardous levels from Paw Paw, W.Va., to Harpers Ferry, W.Va., because of recent rainfall, according to an agency release.a

The warning includes streams adjacent to the Potomac.

Dangers for non-white-water vessels, tubers, swimmers and fishermen include hypothermia and treacherous currents, the release said.

The warning doesn't apply to professionally guided river trips or teams of experienced white-water paddlers, the release said.
