Simmons named Youth of the Month

Staff Writer

Megan E. Simmons, 13, of Clear Spring, was named Youth of the Month Tuesday by the Washington County Commissioners.

An eighth-grader at Clear Spring Middle School, Megan has been an honor roll student and is president of the Student Senate this year.

"That sounds like a potential County Commissioner candidate in a few years," said County Commissioners President Gregory I. Snook.

Megan thanked the commissioners for the award.

"I feel proud and honored and greatly appreciate it," she said.

She credited the support of teachers and her parents for her success. She said another reason she is doing well is that she cares about the future, and said she wished other students felt the same way.

She said she might want to be a pediatrician.

She works on the yearbook staff and sings in the school chorus.

She previously received the Washington County Association of Elementary School Administrator's Citizenship Award, Student of the Month and other student awards.

She plays softball in the Washington County Girls Softball League and has participated in the "Jump Rope for Heart" program since the fourth grade.

She is the daughter of Kathleen and Donald Simmons of Clear Spring.

Simmons will receive a $50 savings bond courtesy of the Rotary Club of Hagerstown.

The Washington County Children's Council is seeking nominations for the Youth of the Month award. Those wishing to make nominations can call Glenda Helman at 1-301-797-4161.
