Man shoots self in leg

MARLOWE, W.Va. - A Berkeley County, W.Va., man was taken to Washington County Hospital Tuesday night after accidentally shooting himself in the left leg.

Capt. Brian Lowman of the Williamsport Ambulance Service said the unidentified man suffered a serious wound to his lower leg in the 8:24 p.m. accident. The man was taking a .30-.30 caliber rifle from his truck for cleaning when it went off, Lowman said.

Lowman said the incident occurred at the man's home on McKowan Road. Lowman said ambulances from Bedington and the Berkeley County Ambulance Authority also went to the scene.

A Maryland State Police helicopter was put on standby, but Lowman said it was determined that taking him by ambulance would take less time.

The victim was being prepared for transport to the Baltimore Shock Trauma Unit late last night, according to Lowman.
