Witnesses said a 72-year-old Hagerstown man seemed to be ill Saturday morning before he veered his car off the southbound lane of Eastern Boulevard and plunged into a culvert shortly after 10:30 a.m.

Several concerned motorists reached Paul Robert Mijanovich and began giving him aid but were unable to save him, according to Cpl. Daryl Sanders of the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

"They were really Good Samaritans and tried to help but he had major head trauma,'' Sanders said.

When Sanders arrived at 10:38 a.m., he found several people with the victim at his 1990 Toyota station wagon which was in a ditch just south of Security Road.

The car, which witnesses said had been driving erratically just before the accident, traveled 290 feet before coming to rest against an elevated driveway entrance, Sanders said.

It wasn't known Saturday if Mijanovich died as a result of a medical problem or the injuries from the single-vehicle accident, Sanders said.

Community Rescue Service transported Mijanovich, a resident of 1130 Hamilton Boulevard, to Washington County Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Sanders said.
