MERCERSBURG, Pa. - An Alexandria, Va., man died of an apparent broken neck Monday night while skiing on the beginner's slope at Whitetail Ski Resort, Pennsylvania State Police and ski resort officials said Tuesday.

Norman Carroll Koon, 59, was found by another skier Monday at about 6:30 p.m. just off the edge of the snow surface on Snow Park Trail, said Matt Sawyer, Whitetail's director of marketing and sales.

The Whitetail Ski Patrol arrived at the scene a minute after they were notified and administered CPR when Koon showed no signs of a pulse or respiration, Sawyer said.

Paramedics from the ski resort's first aid center, staffed by Waynesboro Area Advanced Life Support, continued CPR in the ambulance on the way to Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, Sawyer said.

Koon was pronounced dead at the hospital of an apparent broken neck, according to state police.

Koon, who had skied before, was on a trip with family and friends but there were no witnesses to the accident, Sawyer said.

He could not say whether speed was a factor or if Koon hit something while skiing.

"We don't have any description of what took place," he said.

Koon's death is the second fatality at Whitetail since the resort opened in 1991, Sawyer said.
