Ornery goose settles in pond

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - There was a goose on the loose Sunday, but at last report it was resting comfortably in a pond.

At about 7:20 p.m. city police received a report of a fowl in a foul mood outside a home at the intersection of Stephen and Water streets. According to a dispatcher, the bird had landed in the small pond, but was apparently disturbed by the headlights of passing cars.

The bird didn't appear to be injured or ill, but the dispatcher said, "Nobody can get close to it."

City police were going to contact the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources about how to handle the unhappy bird. At 10:30 p.m., however, the dispatcher said the goose had nestled down for a peaceful night.


Man facing charges of drug possession

FREDERICK, Md. - A Damascus, Md., man was arrested Saturday night after an officer on patrol checked out a parked vehicle behind the Elks Club on Willowdale Drive and smelled burnt marijuana inside, according to the Frederick Police Department.

Shawn Christopher E.T. Self, 19, of 27508 Ridge Road, was charged with possession of marijuana and two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia after a bag of marijuana and a marijuana pipe were allegedly found in one of his pockets, police said.

A large bong, a device used for smoking marijuana, was found in the vehicle, police said.

Pair faces drug, conspiracy charges

FREDERICK, Md. - Two Frederick men were arrested Saturday night on drug charges after police saw them engaging in suspicious activity in the parking lot of the John Hanson Apartment Complex, according to the Frederick Police Department.

James A. Howes Sr., 43, of 7922 Mckeg Road, allegedly threw several pieces of crack cocaine on the ground as he attempted to get out of a parked truck as police officers approached, police said.

Howes was charged with possession of crack cocaine and conspiracy to possess cocaine, police said.

The truck's driver, John Francis Kemp, 29, of 9529 Liberty Road, was charged with conspiracy to possess cocaine, trespassing and driving on a revoked license, police said.

Trespassing charge follows incident

FREDERICK, Md. - A Gaithersburg, Md., man was arrested early Sunday after a disturbance in a city nightclub led to obscenities being shouted at a police officer there, according to the Frederick Police Department.

The incident happened at about 1:40 a.m. at the Ex-Hale club on South Jefferson Street, police said.

Christian J. Abad, 23, of 18421 Last Knife Circle, was charged with trespassing and disorderly conduct, police said.

Pa. man charged with trespassing

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - A McConnellsburg man was charged with criminal mischief and criminal trespass after the home of a 25-year-old McConnellsburg woman was forcibly entered Thursday.

Salem Glenn Wilt, 34, of Cardinal Glenn Apartments, was also charged with disorderly conduct, harassment and public drunkenness and was taken to Franklin County Prison after the 11 p.m. incident.

Man faces assault, weapons charges

SMITHSBURG - A Clear Spring man was arrested after a fight with a woman and police broke out in front of Wolf's Den Bar in Smithsburg Friday night, police said.

William David Haviland Sr., 32, of 11512 Dam No. 5 Road, was charged with two counts of second-degree assault, disorderly conduct, carrying a concealed weapon and resisting arrest, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

Police said Haviland's wife, Roberta Haviland, 32, was struck in the face before Cpl. Travers Ruppert arrived. She was pushed by a man who walked out into the middle of the street and began to yell loudly, police said.

The man then drew back his fist and threatened to assault Ruppert, police said. Ruppert sprayed him with pepper spray and subdued him after a struggle, police said.

The concealed weapon was a folding knife with a 4 1/2-inch blade, police said.

Haviland was taken to the Washington County Detention Center.

Cash stolen from recycling services

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A box containing about $2,000 in cash was stolen from American Recycling Services Friday, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Police believe whoever took the cash box entered the building at 6200 Mount Zion Road while workers were at lunch.

Chain saws stolen from S&M Sales

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Seven chain saws valued at about $3,000 were stolen from S&M Sales between Friday and Saturday, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Police believe someone entered the shop at 9712 Wayne Highway after opening a garage door at the rear of the building.

Man charged with drug possession

FREDERICK, Md. - A Mount Airy, Md., man was arrested on marijuana possession charges Friday evening in the 800 block of East Street, Frederick Police said.

Michael J. Burrows, 19, was a passenger in a vehicle stopped for a traffic violation at 6:20 p.m., police said.

Man charged with disorderly conduct

FREDERICK, Md. - A Frederick man was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest Friday night after banging on a door and yelling in the 1400 block of Taney Apartments, Frederick Police said.

Samuel M. Plummer, 62, of Sagner Drive, was arrested at 9:55 p.m.
