Toddler drowns in pond

December 26, 1997

LEWISTOWN, Md. - A 2-year-old Emmitsburg boy drowned Christmas day in a pond at a family member's home, the Frederick County Sheriff's Office reported.

"Apparently he walked off while they were out in the yard playing," Sgt. Scot Hopkins said Thursday night. He said the toddler's death was being investigated as an accidental drowning.

Hopkins said the boy's name was not being released until all members of the family were contacted.

The call came in at 11:50 a.m., according to Frederick County Emergency Services. A unit from Walkersville Ambulance Co. arrived at the scene first with Deputy First Class Derek Kreitenstein arriving a short time later.

The sheriff's report said family members were performing CPR on the boy when the ambulance arrived and took over. He was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital, but efforts to resuscitate him failed.

The pond was on the property of the relatives the child's family was visiting, Hopkins said. He did not know how many people were present when the accident occurred, nor would he release the names of those who lived there.

Detective Tracy McCutcheon was investigating the accident, but had not completed her report as of last night, Hopkins said.
