New eatery taking off at airport

Forget Ring Dings, Doritos and Twinkies on your next trip to the Washington County Regional Airport. At the new Angel Wings Cafe, you can have gourmet to go.

Whether it be raspberry barbecued chicken, vegetarian chili or Greek salad with marinated shrimp, the new cafe - a creation of Heaven's Gate restaurant owners Carolyn and Terry Lenny - has something for you.

"We don't want to just provide fast food," she said.

"Things are made from scratch and people can tell the difference."

The food comes from their restaurant and catering experience, with low-fat, low-cholesterol offerings available for the traveling crowd.

Vegetables, meats and cheeses wrapped in tortillas make a handy meal for trips.

Carolyn Lenny said because they make things from scratch, it's easier to meet people's special diet needs, too.

And unlike larger airports, with their $4 slices of pizza and $1.50 Cokes, Angel Wings sports reasonable prices, with most entrees priced around $2.50.

For Carolyn Lenny, it's a return to the airport business. She had previously worked as an airplane dispatcher at National Airport, handling trips for businessmen and stars ranging from Charlton Heston to the queen of Norway.

"We could never find a caterer who could understand the needs of an airplane," she said.

The couple also runs a catering operation called Eat Heavenly, and they specialize in vegetarian delicacies.

The Angel Wings name fits in with the heavenly nature of their other businesses.

"You don't just eat food. It's a spiritual experience," she said.

Lenny said her menu also is conducive to healthier traveling. Researchers are finding that junky foods and caffeine travelers often consume increases their discomfort in pressurized air cabins.

"Food plays a big part in the whole travel experience," she said.

One of the specialties is a Damascus Road Wrap. It includes hummus, feta cheese, roasted red peppers, marinated vegetables and bean sprouts in a soft spinach tortilla.

Other offerings include French toast sticks, oatmeal, fresh baked bread, muffins and fruit.

You can also get a spot of hot, spiced cider, a breakfast burrito or quiche.

The cafe is open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and also will be open Saturdays and Sundays depending on the flight schedule.

As for Heaven's Gate, the couple plans to reopen the restaurant in former doctors' offices at 143-147 W. Washington St. this spring. The restaurant will be twice as large as before at 10,000 square feet, but the feeling will be intimate with a number of small, fireplace-equipped rooms, she said. The couple is restoring the historic building and will decorate it as if it's 1903.

The couple also plans to turn part of the building into a bed-and-breakfast called The Doctor's Inn.

If the cafe's a success, Carolyn Lenny said they'd like to franchise out to other regional airports.
