GREENCASTLE, Pa. - A fire that caused major damage to a Greencastle area home early Monday killed two Jack Russell terriers and a cat and caused minor injuries to four firefighters, according to an official with the Rescue Hose Co. in Greencastle.

There were no serious injuries in the fire at the single-family, two-story frame home at 557 Buchanan Trail West, said Robert Mellott, assistant fire chief at Rescue Hose Co.

Four firefighters were slightly hurt. Injuries included a burn on the foot and hand and back damage, Mellott said. All four were taken to Waynesboro Hospital as a precaution and released.

He said the occupant of the home, Linda Shank, had left for work.

The only other occupants were the two dogs and the cat. All three died of smoke inhalation, Mellott said.

"When we got there, heavy fire was blowing out of the side of the house. We had reports that the house was occupied, so we had to go in," Mellott said.

Two passersby called in the alarm on cellular phones and banged on the door before firefighters arrived, Mellott said.

Units from Waynesboro, Mercersburg, Marion and Maugansville responded.

The Pennsylvania fire marshal's office is investigating the fire, Mellott said.
