A Hagerstown firefighter has been jailed on $35,000 bond after being charged with breaking into his girlfriend's home Friday and assaulting her, according to Hagerstown City Police.

The arrest marked the second time in three months that Vinson Stuart Dieterich, 34, of 13 E. Baltimore St., Funkstown, has been charged after an alleged confrontation with the same woman.

Dieterich was charged with first-, third- and fourth-degree burglary, second-degree assault and destruction of property.

Bond on the earlier charge was revoked Monday in Washington County District Court and Friday's bond of $20,000 on the second incident was raised to $35,000, court records said.

The Friday incident began at 1 a.m. and ended at 7:30 a.m. when Dieterich left Pamela Jeanne Staley's home at 916 Corbett St. and she called police, authorities alleged.

Staley said Dieterich knocked on the door of her home at 1 a.m. Friday, police said. When she saw who it was, she refused to let him, police said.

The door was kicked in, the frame was destroyed, and Staley was grabbed around the throat and thrown against a wall, police reports said.

She then was straddled on a couch, was spat upon and slapped in the face with an open hand, police reports said.

Staley told police the man left her home briefly but came back while she was in the bathroom, police reports said.

Staley was then forced to the floor and kicked in the face, police reports alleged.

Afterward, Staley called police and Officer Mike Shifler arrived, followed by Detective George Knight, who took pictures of Staley's injuries and the damage to the home.

Hagerstown Fire Chief Gary Hawbaker confirmed that Dieterich is a Hagerstown firefighter.

A decision on the status of Dieterich's employment with the City of Hagerstown pending the resolution of the charges was to be made later today, Hawbaker said.
