CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A Chambersburg man accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend to death in the parking lot of Siggy's Food and Spirits on Sept. 7 pleaded not guilty to a charge of criminal homicide Wednesday morning in Franklin County Court.

Kevin Barrett, 34, of 627 Siloam Road, entered the plea during an informal arraignment with his attorney, William Fulton, of Harrisburg, Pa. A trial will be scheduled for March.

Barrett was charged three months ago in the death of Wendy Wise Schuchman, 32, of 136 Kennedy St.

He is accused of shooting Schuchman twice in the chest with a shotgun in the restaurant's parking lot on Norland Avenue before turning the gun on himself.

Barrett was flown to York Hospital in York, Pa., with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.

The Franklin County district attorney's office is seeking a first-degree murder conviction, which could bring a maximum sentence of life imprisonment or the death penalty if circumstances show cause, said District Attorney John F. Nelson.

According to testimony from witnesses at Barrett's preliminary hearing Nov. 6 before District Justice Gary Carter, Barrett and Schuchman were in the bar Sept. 7 before closing. Schuchman and her friends left about 2:20 a.m.

As she walked to her car, Barrett pulled up in his Chevrolet Suburban, got out, walked around it, then raised the gun, according to testimony.

Schuchman turned to run and Barrett shot her in the chest, according to a witness. As she fell to the ground, Barrett walked up to Schuchman, stood over her and shot her again, a witness said.

Then Barrett shot himself in the chest, according to testimony.

Witnesses said Barrett and Schuchman had stopped dating months before, but Barrett was having a hard time getting over her.

A search of Barrett's truck turned up a photo of Schuchman on the center console and a title from a mobile home they had bought together, according to Chambersburg police.

Barrett remains in Franklin County Prison without bail.
