Expect delays on Dual Highway

December 12, 1997

A portion of eastbound Dual Highway will be closed from Monday through Wednesday, according to the Maryland State Highway Administration.

The left lane heading out of the city will be closed from the Ramada Inn past the bridge crossing Antietam Creek, said George Small, a district traffic engineer.

Only one eastbound lane will be open surrounding the Eastern Boulevard intersection from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on those three days, Small said.

There will definitely be traffic delays, Small said. He suggested eastbound drivers use Mount Aetna Road as an alternative to Dual Highway.

The state is closing the left lane so soil samples can be taken below the creek to determine what kind of footers to design for a bridge expansion, Small said.

A drilling rig cannot be placed under the bridge, he said. A six-inch diameter hole will be drilled through the bridge and 20 feet under the creek to take the samples, Small said. The bridge will be patched when the work is done.

Small said he did not know how much the work would cost.

State officials are planning to build a $1.9 million bridge expansion on the eastbound bridge that will allow for a westbound lane to turn onto Eastern Boulevard South.
