A Hagerstown man who is awaiting trial on a November robbery attempt and assault pleaded guilty Tuesday in Washington County Circuit Court to the sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl nearly a year ago.

Sean Jeffrey Thompson, 27, was sent back to the Washington County Detention Center by Judge Kennedy Boone, who ordered a pre-sentence investigation.

Thompson faces a maximum of 10 years in prison for the third-degree sex offense to which he pleaded guilty. In exchange for that plea, charges of fourth-degree sex offense and contributing to the delinquency of a minor were dropped.

Thompson was being held on the robbery and a parole retake for a prior assault with intent to murder, jail officials said.

The sexual assault occurred Jan. 11 when the victim, now 15, was attending a birthday party and spent the night at a friend's house, court records said.

During the night, Thompson approached the girl and began kissing her, court records said. He then fondled her breasts and they had consentual sexual intercourse, according to records.

The new and unrelated charges, filed Nov. 14, include first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault, attempt to rob, reckless endangerment, attempted theft and destruction of property.

On July 17, Hagerstown City Police were called to the front of Duke's Tavern, 33 E. Franklin St., at 1:42 p.m. for a report of a robbery.

When they arrived, they found Russell Sites Jr., 75, of Hagerstown, bleeding from the mouth, and Teresa Shatzer, 33, also of Hagerstown, with a cut on her forehead.

The two told police their assailant had run toward East Washington Street after he knocked Sites down in a robbery attempt, and hit both of them.

Thompson was apprehended a short time later.
