Mail Call

December 10, 1997

"After reading the judge's decision that the Smithsburg police chief serves at the whim of the mayor, I'm left wondering who would want the chief's job knowing that he or she could be fired by the mayor at any time without reason or justification?"

-----

"Whoever stole the flower arrangement and Christmas ornaments off the Christmas tree at Rose Hill Cemetery, the Stotler plot, I would appreciate your returning them. It takes a pretty low person to steal from a cemetery and you know who you are. A loved one."

-----

"Hey, happy anniversary Rick and Sharon. Many more to come."

-----

"Congratulations Stan and Ollie for making the 11th grade honor roll at North Hagerstown High School. Keep up the good work."

-----

"About the Washington County Detention Center. I've read what many have had to say about visits, whether or not they should receive them and to be able to hug loved ones. First of all I've been incarcerated at the Washington County Detention Center for writing on a door in my old house. Boy, I'm sure a criminal, or a disgrace to society! But nevertheless, I did my time. My point is that there are many incarcerated for non-violent crimes or misdemeanors who don't really belong in there. There are some accused of very violent crimes but who knows if they're really guilty? Just because some judge, prosecutor and jury says so, that's still not enough proof for me. My point is that everyone is entitled to a hug or greeting on Christmas or any other day and those who disagree should seek help. Thank you and Merry Christmas to all the inmates."

"To Hagerstown and all the surrounding areas, the holidays are here and those of you who have decorated their houses, apartments, farms, balconies yards and more, my family thanks you. Have a happy holiday."

-----

"I'd like to wish my daughter Karen a happy 16th birthday. We're very proud of you. Love, your family."

-----

"After reading Sunday's paper, chalk one up for Editor Maginnis. Strike two County Commissioners, you're almost out. Literally. Incidentally Commissioner Wade, where were you during the medical waste facility vote?"

-----

"How disturbing to read and hear about the current dislike of little babies. I read in Mail Call where there's a caller criticizing the seven babies and that they're creating an overpopulation problem. Our president has twice vetoed congressional ban on partial birth abortions of almost full term babies. What is wrong with our sick society that poor little innocent babies are the target of such dislike, even hatred?"

-----

"This is to the parents of the children who catch their school bus on the corner of Potomac and Lee Street. I'd like to tell you that you should try and get your kids to stay on the sidewalk. They make a game out of seeing how close they can get to the road and one of these days they're gonna get hit by a car and we're really gonna feel bad about it but they all stand there in defiance thinking it's a big game. So please tell your kids to stay on the sidewalk."

-----

"Hi. I want to wish Joe a happy birthday. Love Nanny."

-----

"Hi Mail Call. To the people commenting on the seven babies. They are not dogs or cats or whatever, so don't call them litters. And everything God makes and gives is a blessing. So if you're saying they were a mishap then you're saying what God makes is a mishap and that's totally wrong. God never makes mistakes. He blessed them and God blesses every couple who is able to have children. Thank you and have a good day."

-----

"I've really been inspired by the religious music Holyfield uses when he comes into the ring and I was wondering if anyone knows the name of the group or groups that he listens to? If you do, would you call Mail Call and let me know? Thank you."

-----

"I'd like to know why so many of these so-called religious groups are so concerned about the people overseas when we have children and adults homeless and hungry right here in the United States? Why don't they start with their own people before they worry about people overseas? Thank you."

-----

"Hi Mail Call. I have an answer for all the overpopulation of dogs and cats. This country could make a lot of money if we gathered up all these strays and shipped them to either Korea or China where they love eating them. It would save the taxpayers of this country a lot of money and we could make some profit off of all these cats and dogs instead of worrying about the SPCA handling them. Look at all the money we could get in return."

-----

"I just want to let everyone out there know that the caller in Monday's paper wasn't really Brad Pitt. He doesn't drive a red corvette, he drives a black Nissan."

-----

"I agree with all the callers that say even prisoners need love and affection. Maybe if they would have had it growing up and all along they wouldn't be in the jails. Did anyone ever stop to think about that? Studies show that most prisoners were abused, neglected, beaten and unloved as children. That's a lot of their problems. They need all the love they can get even if they're in jail. Thank you."

-----

"If half of the people who call into Mail Call knew what they were talking about Hagerstown would be a very intelligent place to live. Think about it. Thank you."
